Proposed Gondola Could Connect Downtown Traverse City to Old Mission Peninsula

Scenic Gondola Proposed Between Downtown Traverse City and Old Mission Peninsula

Traverse City may soon be getting a new way to cross the bay — and it’s not by car or boat.

A conceptual proposal unveiled this week outlines plans for a scenic gondola system connecting downtown Traverse City to Old Mission Peninsula, offering both transportation and panoramic views of Grand Traverse Bay.

According to early details, the gondola would depart from a station near Clinch Park and travel across the water to multiple stops along the peninsula, including areas near popular wineries and Mission Point Lighthouse.

Project planners say the system is being explored as a way to ease seasonal traffic congestion while enhancing the region’s tourism experience.

“This would give residents and visitors a completely new perspective of the bay,” said one project representative. “It’s transportation, but it’s also part of the destination.”

Preliminary concepts include:

  • Enclosed, all-season gondola cabins seating 6–8 passengers

  • A mid-bay “pause point” designed for scenic viewing and photography

  • Direct access to select wineries and lookout areas

  • Travel time estimated at under 10 minutes from downtown to the peninsula

Local reaction has been mixed, with some residents excited about the potential for reduced traffic and others questioning how the system would fit into the area’s natural landscape.

City officials emphasize that the project is still in the very early stages, with feasibility studies and environmental reviews required before any decisions are made.

No timeline or cost estimates have been released.
