Blizzard post-mortem: Was this Traverse City’s snowiest storm ever?

• The Ticker reports Traverse City’s National Weather Service co-op site measured 19.8 inches of snow from this week’s storm, making it one of the city’s biggest snow events on record.

• Meteorologist Mike Boguth told The Ticker that while this storm may rival past blizzards for snowfall totals, it did not match the historic 1978 storm for intensity or wind strength.

• The story also points to the broader takeaway for Northern Michigan: March can still deliver some of winter’s most severe weather because warm southern moisture can clash with lingering Arctic air.

1
00:00:00,799 --> 00:00:03,279
Good morning, Northern Michigan. This is your cup

2
00:00:03,279 --> 00:00:07,200
of Traverse City for the 03/20/2026,

3
00:00:07,200 --> 00:00:07,700
and

4
00:00:08,160 --> 00:00:08,660
spring

5
00:00:09,439 --> 00:00:11,619
is going to spring today

6
00:00:12,080 --> 00:00:14,660
at 10:46AM.

7
00:00:16,045 --> 00:00:18,125
Doesn't hardly look like it out there, but,

8
00:00:18,364 --> 00:00:20,304
it's melting. It's all good.

9
00:00:21,164 --> 00:00:21,664
So

10
00:00:22,285 --> 00:00:24,865
I'm gonna do a blizzard post mortem.

11
00:00:26,285 --> 00:00:29,105
Is this Traverse City snowiest snowiest

12
00:00:29,565 --> 00:00:30,625
storm ever?

13
00:00:31,170 --> 00:00:33,969
I don't know. They had a avalanche of

14
00:00:33,969 --> 00:00:38,210
business shutdowns, major thoroughfares like Grandview Parkway, M

15
00:00:38,210 --> 00:00:40,469
72 briefly closed to traffic.

16
00:00:40,929 --> 00:00:43,729
Four consecutive snow days for the local schools

17
00:00:43,729 --> 00:00:46,534
and tens of thousands of Michigan power customers

18
00:00:46,534 --> 00:00:47,515
without electricity.

19
00:00:48,375 --> 00:00:50,715
These are just a few of the impact

20
00:00:51,895 --> 00:00:52,395
impacts

21
00:00:52,854 --> 00:00:54,954
of this week's epic storm.

22
00:00:55,414 --> 00:00:57,354
So that's from the ticker, of course.

23
00:00:57,814 --> 00:00:59,515
It seems to be my go to

24
00:00:59,940 --> 00:01:02,039
for but, you know, it brings up something.

25
00:01:03,380 --> 00:01:05,379
You know, is this bigger than the blizzard

26
00:01:05,379 --> 00:01:07,620
of seventy eight? Well, in some ways, it

27
00:01:07,620 --> 00:01:08,120
is.

28
00:01:09,700 --> 00:01:11,400
Blizzard of seventy eight,

29
00:01:12,575 --> 00:01:14,995
As far as the total amount of snowfall,

30
00:01:16,495 --> 00:01:18,114
I know it was in here somewhere.

31
00:01:20,655 --> 00:01:23,534
Yeah. So the blizzard is 78 went all

32
00:01:23,534 --> 00:01:25,409
the way down to nine hundred and fifty

33
00:01:25,570 --> 00:01:28,070
fifty five millibars in pressure.

34
00:01:28,930 --> 00:01:30,390
That's, the lowest

35
00:01:31,329 --> 00:01:32,549
pressure of any

36
00:01:33,730 --> 00:01:34,710
any storm

37
00:01:36,210 --> 00:01:38,390
ever except for hurricanes.

38
00:01:39,250 --> 00:01:40,150
You know, some

39
00:01:41,545 --> 00:01:43,944
some hurricanes, you know, like a category five

40
00:01:43,944 --> 00:01:45,005
hurricane would

41
00:01:45,465 --> 00:01:46,665
be 920

42
00:01:46,665 --> 00:01:48,045
millibars. We got,

43
00:01:48,984 --> 00:01:49,724
the storm

44
00:01:50,025 --> 00:01:52,825
got down to what was it? But yeah.

45
00:01:52,825 --> 00:01:55,064
Nine fifty five was what the blizzard of

46
00:01:55,064 --> 00:01:58,180
seventy eight was, and this one was a

47
00:01:58,180 --> 00:01:59,939
little higher than that, but I can't find

48
00:01:59,939 --> 00:02:01,719
the right number. It's in the article.

49
00:02:02,259 --> 00:02:02,759
But

50
00:02:03,700 --> 00:02:04,840
by a snowfall,

51
00:02:05,859 --> 00:02:07,079
it actually is,

52
00:02:07,939 --> 00:02:08,439
bigger.

53
00:02:11,865 --> 00:02:14,425
Somewhere in here, they measured the snow and,

54
00:02:15,224 --> 00:02:17,545
it ended up being like 15 inches at

55
00:02:17,545 --> 00:02:20,665
the airport. The official, you know, official amount

56
00:02:20,665 --> 00:02:22,665
of snowfall. Now that doesn't account for the

57
00:02:22,665 --> 00:02:24,365
thirty and forty foot drifts

58
00:02:24,790 --> 00:02:27,430
that we're, around because of the 70 mile

59
00:02:27,430 --> 00:02:29,990
per hour winds. So, yeah, that storm was

60
00:02:29,990 --> 00:02:33,129
definitely impactful and probably a little more impactful

61
00:02:33,830 --> 00:02:36,469
being that, we didn't have the technology we

62
00:02:36,469 --> 00:02:37,985
have now to,

63
00:02:38,844 --> 00:02:40,764
train you know, get around. I mean, think

64
00:02:40,764 --> 00:02:42,844
about it. You know, how many people had

65
00:02:42,844 --> 00:02:44,465
four wheel drives even,

66
00:02:44,925 --> 00:02:46,685
in 1978

67
00:02:46,685 --> 00:02:47,185
versus

68
00:02:47,724 --> 00:02:48,224
now?

69
00:02:48,764 --> 00:02:51,805
You know, almost every car is available as

70
00:02:51,805 --> 00:02:53,889
all wheel drive, and I think most people

71
00:02:53,889 --> 00:02:56,389
drive all wheel drives, you know, at least,

72
00:02:58,210 --> 00:02:59,669
you know, at least around here.

73
00:03:00,210 --> 00:03:02,069
You know, of course, the port post office,

74
00:03:02,290 --> 00:03:04,710
lot most of their little vans are not.

75
00:03:04,849 --> 00:03:06,710
Speaking of which, I haven't had mail,

76
00:03:07,284 --> 00:03:08,584
since last Saturday,

77
00:03:09,604 --> 00:03:10,664
here. But,

78
00:03:11,685 --> 00:03:13,544
that's besides the point.

79
00:03:14,644 --> 00:03:18,245
But we had 19

80
00:03:18,245 --> 00:03:20,264
something inches of snow officially.

81
00:03:20,724 --> 00:03:21,800
19.8

82
00:03:21,800 --> 00:03:25,080
inches of snow officially in Traverse City. Other

83
00:03:25,080 --> 00:03:27,879
parts had more than that, obviously, 24 to

84
00:03:27,879 --> 00:03:28,379
30

85
00:03:28,759 --> 00:03:30,219
inches in the Upper Peninsula.

86
00:03:31,159 --> 00:03:34,199
And there's even, one place that had 52

87
00:03:34,199 --> 00:03:36,664
inches of snow, which is the all time

88
00:03:36,664 --> 00:03:37,564
state record.

89
00:03:38,344 --> 00:03:40,924
It didn't say somewhere in the UP, obviously.

90
00:03:41,305 --> 00:03:44,504
Oh, Munising. That's right. Reported 52 inches of

91
00:03:44,504 --> 00:03:45,004
snow.

92
00:03:46,344 --> 00:03:46,844
Geez.

93
00:03:48,560 --> 00:03:49,280
It's just ridiculous.

94
00:03:50,560 --> 00:03:53,199
You look outside and it's gone down a

95
00:03:53,199 --> 00:03:55,280
lot. My little snow meter in the yard

96
00:03:55,280 --> 00:03:56,419
here had 15,

97
00:03:57,759 --> 00:04:00,000
at the end of this whole thing, fifteen,

98
00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:00,500
sixteen

99
00:04:00,879 --> 00:04:01,539
in that

100
00:04:02,205 --> 00:04:05,724
range. And yesterday, we lost six and, it's

101
00:04:05,724 --> 00:04:08,284
already melted down even more. It was above

102
00:04:08,284 --> 00:04:09,425
freezing all night.

103
00:04:09,884 --> 00:04:11,344
But, yeah, that was

104
00:04:12,125 --> 00:04:13,104
that was something.

105
00:04:14,790 --> 00:04:16,009
But I think it's

106
00:04:16,470 --> 00:04:19,990
on its way out again officially it's spring

107
00:04:19,990 --> 00:04:21,290
here in a couple hours

108
00:04:22,230 --> 00:04:24,410
so that's a good thing.

109
00:04:25,029 --> 00:04:27,689
Snow totals for Traverse City for the season,

110
00:04:28,345 --> 00:04:30,264
it's a 141

111
00:04:30,264 --> 00:04:30,764
inches,

112
00:04:31,865 --> 00:04:32,764
which is,

113
00:04:33,865 --> 00:04:36,425
above normal, obviously. 93.3

114
00:04:36,425 --> 00:04:38,824
is the normal to date, and we are

115
00:04:38,824 --> 00:04:40,925
at a 152%

116
00:04:40,985 --> 00:04:41,725
of normal.

117
00:04:42,539 --> 00:04:43,599
Of course, the record

118
00:04:43,979 --> 00:04:47,339
was ninety five ninety six with a 191.2

119
00:04:47,339 --> 00:04:49,180
inches. I don't think we're gonna get there,

120
00:04:49,180 --> 00:04:51,019
and I'm hoping we don't get any higher

121
00:04:51,019 --> 00:04:52,000
than we are now.

122
00:04:52,620 --> 00:04:54,539
I'm done with it. Hey, you know, I'm

123
00:04:54,539 --> 00:04:56,399
I'm ready for for spring,

124
00:04:57,794 --> 00:04:59,814
to officially have sprung.

125
00:05:00,514 --> 00:05:02,354
So speaking of which, let's take a look

126
00:05:02,354 --> 00:05:03,095
at the weather.

127
00:05:03,475 --> 00:05:06,514
20% chance of snow showers before not snow

128
00:05:06,514 --> 00:05:07,014
showers.

129
00:05:07,474 --> 00:05:08,274
20%

130
00:05:08,274 --> 00:05:09,495
chance of showers,

131
00:05:09,954 --> 00:05:10,454
rain,

132
00:05:11,709 --> 00:05:15,490
to before 2PM. Patchy fog before 1PM.

133
00:05:15,949 --> 00:05:18,269
And I did hear there's some patchy fog

134
00:05:18,269 --> 00:05:20,289
around the South End Of Long Lake.

135
00:05:20,589 --> 00:05:22,669
Where I heard that, I don't remember. But,

136
00:05:22,669 --> 00:05:24,050
anyway, I heard that.

137
00:05:24,454 --> 00:05:26,375
So be careful driving out there,

138
00:05:26,855 --> 00:05:27,995
for fog anyway,

139
00:05:28,375 --> 00:05:31,274
if not sloppy slushy conditions and spots.

140
00:05:32,055 --> 00:05:35,654
Otherwise, it's cloudy then gradually becoming mostly sunny.

141
00:05:35,654 --> 00:05:37,115
High near 44

142
00:05:37,480 --> 00:05:39,800
Southwest wind, five to 10 miles per hour

143
00:05:39,800 --> 00:05:41,259
becoming north in the afternoon.

144
00:05:41,879 --> 00:05:42,540
Alright. Tonight,

145
00:05:44,439 --> 00:05:47,259
mostly cloudy with a low around 28. Northwest

146
00:05:47,399 --> 00:05:48,620
wind around five.

147
00:05:49,240 --> 00:05:52,279
Saturday, mostly cloudy with a high near 45.

148
00:05:52,279 --> 00:05:54,514
South wind around five miles per hour.

149
00:05:55,855 --> 00:05:58,654
Saturday night, a 50% chance of snow showers

150
00:05:58,654 --> 00:06:00,275
mainly before 2AM,

151
00:06:00,654 --> 00:06:03,154
mostly cloudy with a low around thirty three.

152
00:06:03,615 --> 00:06:06,675
South wind around five becoming west after midnight.

153
00:06:07,129 --> 00:06:09,610
Sunday night, a chance of rain showers before

154
00:06:09,610 --> 00:06:11,849
2PM, and then a slight chance of rain

155
00:06:11,849 --> 00:06:12,669
and snow

156
00:06:12,970 --> 00:06:13,470
showers.

157
00:06:14,889 --> 00:06:17,370
There's that word again. Mostly cloudy with a

158
00:06:17,370 --> 00:06:19,050
high near 38.

159
00:06:19,050 --> 00:06:21,629
North wind five to 10 miles per hour.

160
00:06:22,165 --> 00:06:24,404
And Sunday night, mostly cloudy with a low

161
00:06:24,404 --> 00:06:25,925
around 22.

162
00:06:25,925 --> 00:06:28,985
So and then Monday, mostly sunny and slightly

163
00:06:29,045 --> 00:06:29,865
above freezing.

164
00:06:30,485 --> 00:06:31,384
That's your weekend.

165
00:06:32,004 --> 00:06:32,805
Go out there,

166
00:06:33,205 --> 00:06:35,384
and, you know, get out of the house.

167
00:06:35,685 --> 00:06:37,785
For those of us that were snowed in,

168
00:06:38,189 --> 00:06:41,870
my mom was, literally snowed in. She has

169
00:06:41,870 --> 00:06:43,170
storm doors, which

170
00:06:43,629 --> 00:06:46,029
kind of ironic that, caused her to not

171
00:06:46,029 --> 00:06:47,490
be able to get out of the house.

172
00:06:48,110 --> 00:06:50,050
Well, she had one route, but

173
00:06:50,555 --> 00:06:51,995
then you'd have to wade through a bunch

174
00:06:51,995 --> 00:06:53,754
of snow. So she she never left the

175
00:06:53,754 --> 00:06:54,975
house for three days.

176
00:06:55,995 --> 00:06:58,235
But we got her all shoveled and plowed

177
00:06:58,235 --> 00:06:58,714
out,

178
00:07:00,235 --> 00:07:01,694
on Tuesday, I guess.

179
00:07:02,235 --> 00:07:04,175
Maybe Wednesday. I don't remember.

180
00:07:04,555 --> 00:07:05,055
But,

181
00:07:06,192 --> 00:07:07,172
anyway, everybody

182
00:07:07,552 --> 00:07:08,692
have a great weekend.

183
00:07:09,312 --> 00:07:11,892
Happy spring. We'll catch you on Monday.
