COTC - 6 Mar 2026 - Slush Cup and March Mudness

0:00 Good morning, Northern Michigan. This is your cup of Traverse City for 03/06/2026, and I'm Mike. And I do have my coffee handy. I hope you do too. Let's see. Have you ever heard of a slush cup? I thought that was a pretty good name for the events that are gonna be happening at, Mount Holiday in Hickory Hills, in the coming, I don't know, I guess it's the fifteenth, sixteenth, something like that. The two local ski hills have announced closing dates. Mount Holiday will be closed from the ninth till the twelfth to preserve snow for the annual slush cup, which will occur on Saturday, March 14 as part of the end of season bash.

0:48 You're gonna have, $10 lift tickets. The slush cup itself starts at 11AM, and they're gonna have a DJ and hot dogs dogs and the and the bar and grill there. The tea bar and grill will be open, before they shift into their March 17, change to spring hours. By the way, that's, the t bar over there has pretty good food, and it's open year round. So, go check it out. That's at, Holiday Hill or how Mount Holiday, they call it. I always call it Holiday Hills for some reason, but that's the neighborhood it's in. Hickory Hills will hold its own slush cup Saturday, March 15 from one to 3PM, and it's a tradition that challenges skiers and snowboarders to make it across to a pond of icy water often the most outrageous costumes, and everything.

1:47 Yeah. I know Crystal Mountain does that as well. But, yeah, they, it it looks like a lot of fun, but if you fall in the water, it's pretty cold. So hopefully, they have have done their their due diligence and they have warm up shacks and people there to pull pull people out of the water and all that stuff. But, you you know, a lot of times people go right across it. It's kind of kinda interesting to watch. You know, on YouTube, there's some videos of the one at Crystal Mountain that I saw. But anyway, so the slush cup is happening soon. It's, just another sign of March mudness as, as I keep saying here.

2:35 Speaking of that, looking out my looking out of my, or through my security camera on my driveway, and I'm noticing that the mailbox looks a lot taller than it did a couple of weeks ago. The snow piles were all the way up to the same height as the mailbox, and now it looks like about a six inch little pile left there, along along the road. So, the snow banks are melting. You know, you know, of course, the parking lots, you know, Walmart's parking lot. They've got still mountains of snow over there, but, and, you know, same thing around Cherryland Center and and the, Grand Traverse Mall, all that. But, it's melting.

3:21 And speaking of weather, today's showers mainly after 4PM. Patchy fog, high near 56. South wind, five to 10 miles per hour. Chance for precipitation, Friday, is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch possible. Tonight, showers. And notice it didn't say snow showers. It said showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 10PM. We already had one this year, so that's not out of the question. And then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between ten and 1AM and then showers and possibly a thunderstorm.

4:03 Well, they're they're very verbose on this, weather forecast. But just just say, hey. It's gonna rain and, it's, possibly thunderstorms. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and a half an inch possible. So that's quite a bit. That's gonna melt the snow. Hopefully, the ski hills will will remain snow covered, because I don't think my yard is going to be. Saturday shower is likely possibly a thunderstorm before 1PM. Mostly cloudy with a temperature rising near 58. Wow. 58. And, then falling to around 40, later on in the day. Southwest wind 10 to 15.

4:50 And let's see. We'll go through the weekend. Saturday night, mostly cloudy with a low around 32. So getting cold again. Sunday's, Sunday is a high near 52. Southwest winds, 10 to 15. And then Sunday night, partly cloudy with a little around 44. And Monday's gonna be 57 and sunny. So, yeah. I think spring has sprung. The groundhog was wrong. Let's fire the groundhog or or maybe barbecue him. I don't know. I don't know what a groundhog tastes like.
