COTC - 5 Jan 2026 - OLD SCHOOL Snow day

Speaker 0: Good morning, Northern Michigan. And this is Cup of Traverse City for 01/05/2026. I'm Mike. And, today, I'm gonna age myself a little bit. But, first, let's, take a look at the weather.

As you guys might have noticed, if you're around here, some snow fell last night. I would guess probably three to five inches ish in my yard. I had to shovel my way into the studio this morning, but, I got here and all is well. So for the rest of the day, patchy snow, freezing rain before 10AM, cloudy with a high near 35, south wind around five becoming west in the afternoon. More precipitation is a 30% chance.

Cloudy tonight with a low around thirty and a calm wind. And Tuesday, rain showers before 1PM, and then rain and snow showers likely high near 37. Calm wind and becoming south around five miles an hour. Chance precipitation is 80%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Okay. So how I'm gonna date myself here is I am going to, remember back, when I was a kid. And on a day like this, we would all be huddling around the radio. And, yeah, I know TV existed, but TV was not fast at telling us when the schools were closed. And, the radio was the fastest.

You had to wait till the break between songs or or whatever whatever you were listening to. News talk really didn't wasn't a thing. This is seventies, eighties, radio, so, you know, that dates me right there. But used to wait around the radio and hope that we heard our school. So I'm gonna read the school closing list for this morning, 01/05/2026, and it's alphabetical.

Lansing Public School is closed, Alba Public, Atlanta Community, and, those are all closed. Bay Mills Child Development Center and Bay Mills Community College is opening two hours late. Beaver Island community is closed, Bel Air Public, Boyne City public. Boyne Falls public are all closed. Brimley is opening two hours late.

Cadillac Area public schools are closed. Cadillac Heritage Christian is closed. Cedar or Cedarville Head Start, that's up in the UP opening two hours late. Central Lake is closed. Charlevoix in Saint Mary's is closed.

Charlevoix Public is closed. Charles, who is it? Charlton Heston Academy. That's what I've never heard before. Anyway, wherever that is, it's closed.

Sheboygan area, Claire Gladwin ASD, Coleman Community, Concord Academy, Boyne City, Concord Academy, Petoskey, Crawford, Au Sable. Let's see. Do Detour Area is opening two hours late. These are all closed now. East Jordan Public Schools, Ebenezer Christian, I remember that one from the radio, Ellsworth Community.

Ingadine Consolidated. That's up in the UP opening two hours late. Fairview area is closed. Forest area is closed. Forest area is around Fife Lake here in Grand Traverse County and slash Kalkaska County, I guess.

Let's see. Gaylord's closed or Gaylord Community, Gaylord Saint Mary's, Gladwin Community, Harbor Lake Christian, Harbor Springs Public, Harrison Community, all closed. Emanuel Christian Roscommon is closed. Inland Lakes is closed. Johannesburg Lewiston area is closed.

Joseph k Lumsden. Wow. I don't know what that is. Anyway, that's opening two hours late. Kalkaska is closed.

LTBB Head Start in Pellston is closed. Lake City area is closed. Lake Chenow Community in the UP is opening two hours late. They must not have got it up in the UP as bad as we did here. Mackinac City public.

Mancelona public. Manton consolidated, they're all closed. Maplewood Baptist Academy is opening two hours late. Marion Public, MacBain Christian, MacBain Public, Meridian Public Schools, Mesic Consolidated Schools, Mayo Asabo, they're all closed. Morin Township School District is opening two hours late.

Hey. We're getting there. We're almost halfway through or we are halfway through. NMC Burt Lake, District is closed. North Central Academy is closed.

Ojibwe Charter Schools opening two hours late. Ottawa Area Districts closed. Seago Christian is closed. Paulston Public, Petoskey Public, Petoskey Saint Francis, they're all closed. Pickford in the UP opening two hours late.

Hosen Consolidated over on the East Side is closed. Presquiel, and I can pronounce that, by the way. It's spelled weird. Anyway, Presque Isle, Isle Academy or Presque Isle Academy. There we go.

Yeah. I just bragged about being able to pronounce that properly, and I did, but they're closed. Rogers City Community is closed. Red Yard is opening two hours late the UP. Sault Ste.

Marie Area District is, opening two hours late. Skills Christian Saint Anne School cath or Cadillac is closed. Saint Ignace is two hours late. Saint Mary's Catholic School, Sault Ste. Marie is opening two hours late.

Saint Michael High School in Petoskey is closed. Tuquamanon area in the UP, two hours late. Three Lakes Academy in Curtis, also in the UP, opening two hours late. Vanderbilt area is closed. West Branch, Rose City closed.

Wexford, Mesaki closed. Whitefish Township Community Schools two hours late, and Wolverine Community Schools are closed. Okay. That's what we woulda heard on the radio. Of course, the DJ probably would have done it a little faster.

But, anyway and Traverse City, I didn't see them in the list at all. So I think Traverse City is just running as usual. So I guess that's good. Don't wanna have to make up days at the end of the year, but this this year hasn't been bad. The way they do that around here is they get so many snow days, and then they gotta make them up at the end of the school year in June.

So or they'll, they'll make their spring break a little shorter sometimes, but, you know, we'll have to do that this year. I don't think, but we'll see. And we're actually supposed to get into the forties later this week. So, yeah. The the weather around here is crazy.
